The biggest news coming out of Las Vegas this week was the nice taxi driver that returned $300,000 to a poker player who forget it in his cab. While this is one good deed from a kind taxi driver shouldn’t go unnoticed, it doesn’t really make up for the 25%+ people that get ripped off by Las Vegas taxi drivers who are long hauled (See tips to save money on taxis in Las Vegas).
Next week’s biggest news starts this weekend when Britney Spears begins her residency at Planet Hollywood. Celeb Buzz has a sneak peek at the setlist. Okay, the new year beginning next week may be a little bigger than Britney Spears residency starting over the weekend but I’m a fan and that’s my grrrl.
Being born and raised on the east coast I was trained to think that Times Square in New York City is the only place that matters on New Years Eve. I still think that but the partying in Las Vegas for New Years Eve may be a close second to NYC. Here are a few quick hits so you can make plans or see what you’re missing.
- Las Vegas Weekly has their Party Guide with 12 events not to miss.
- Net News Ledger looks at events from fireworks to eating.
- LA Times runs down the huge bands playing in Vegas for New Years Eve.
2014 will be here shortly and it begins with the largest convention in Las Vegas. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) takes place from January 7 through 10. CES takes place mostly at the Las Vegas Convention Center at LVH but has grown so much that you can find parts part of the expo and convention at the Sands Convention Center at the Venetian. CES is the expo where electronics companies reveal the newest technology. The expo itself is packed and you’ll probably get more info from reading tech blogs. Let them do the dirty work.
If you watch the TV show “Mob Wives” keep your eyes peeled for a little bit of Las Vegas in the January 9th episode. They wives take a little trip to Las Vegas and party at Palms. Robin Leach has details.
Robin Leach also mentions a report from earlier this week that “Dancing Queen” at Planet Hollywood will be closing at the end of the year. The Leach drops a few more nuggets of information that may be of interest.
Olives at Bellagio is not closing despite rumors to the contrary. Chef Todd English has had more than a 15 year run with Olives at Bellagio. It’s nice to see that a place with so many rave reviews will continue.
More coffee at Cosmo! Va Bene Caffe will be opening a second location inside the Cosmopolitan. Va Bene serves Illy brand coffee drinks along with sandwiches, baked goods and more. The new location will be close to Vesper Bar just off the casino floor. This seems like a much better location than the original which is on the 2nd floor tucked in a corner. Eater Vegas has details and pictures.
Earlier this week we detailed the first venues that will be opening at The Linq.
Vegas Chatter has even more places that will open and were supposed to open before the end of the year.
Former UNLV (University of Las Vegas) basketball player, Jackie Robinson, seems to think that he can get another arena built on the Vegas Strip. MGM already has plans to build an arena on the Vegas Strip so the chances of this happening aren’t very likely.
This will be the last news blog of the year and we’d all like to wish you happy holidays and Happy New Year. We’ll see you in 2014!
