Ridesharing isn’t a new concept with most of the larger cities in the United States but it’s still relatively new to Las Vegas. Ridesharing hasn’t exploded in Las Vegas but it hasn’t been entirely slow to catch on as taxi trips have seen a dip since Uber and Lyft started serving the city. While the ridesharing services are having an effect on transportation in Las Vegas, they haven’t become ubiquitous with everyone visiting Las Vegas yet.

There’s always some trepidation when trying new technology for the first time. I don’t use the ridesharing apps and services often so I wasn’t so quick on the draw when first using the Uber app. However, my first time using Uber was fantastic and I’m officially hooked. I can’t imagine taking a taxi again and I’ve heard the same refrain from other first-time rideshare users.

Using rideshare services may be different but they’re not difficult and can potentially save you serious money. Here’s a quick guide to using ridesharing services, Uber and Lyft, in Las Vegas:

Pickup At Hotel or Residence

1. Download the app(s) and set up an account in either or both of the Uber and Lyft apps.

2. If you’re ready to go just set open the app, select your pickup location and destination, and request a ride. If you’re in a hotel you’ll have to locate the designated ridesharing pickup areas (the front desk or valet can help). Ridesharing pickup areas are different at every hotel and may not be in the same location you would get a taxi.

If you want to know about how much your trip will cost you can see a fare estimate in the app. You should always do this in case there’s high demand and dynamic prices are in effect. Airport details are different and detailed below.

3. Once you enter the address or name of your destination, you’ll see the route your driver will take as well as your estimated time of arrival.

4. Before your driver arrives, you can see their name, photo, car details and license plate number so you know you’re getting in the right car.

5. Hop in your car and get to your destination. You’re paying the ridesharing company via credit card provided in the app so you’ll never have to exchange cash with the driver.

Pickup At McCarran Airport

1. Download the apps before you get to Las Vegas and set up an account in either or both Uber and Lyft apps before landing.

2. Wait until you collect your luggage at the baggage carousel before planning a ride. Once you have your bags you should then open the app and select your terminal for pickup and enter the name of your destination.

3. Follow signs to designated Ridesharing pickup areas. Each terminal has a different pickup location. These are the only locations at McCarran Airport where a ridesharing service will pick you up:

-Pickup at Terminal 1 is at Level 2M of the public parking garage.

-Pickup at Terminal 3 is at the Valet Level of the public parking garage.

4. You can see the name, photo, car details and license plate number while you’re walking to the pickup area so you know you’re getting in the right car.

5. Hop in your car and get to your destination. You’re paying the ridesharing company via credit card provided in the app so you’ll never have to exchange cash with the driver.

Bonus Tip From Uber: If you’re riding with friends who have an Uber account you can easily share the cost by tapping “Split Fare.”

That’s it. The process is simple once you’ve tried it. If you’re at the airport you can prepare your car while waiting for your luggage to arrive at the baggage carousel. You can submit the information once you get your bags and walk right to the car. If you’re at a hotel, you can order a car while walking to the designated pickup area and might not even have to wait. I never had to wait.
