Earlier this year MGM Resorts International revealed information on a study they commissioned called “Truth About Entertainment.“ More than 90% of respondents in the United States say that entertainment is a fundamental contributor to their health and happiness. Overall, the study revealed that people all around the world live for entertainment.
Over the past few years, MGM Resorts has been focusing on expanding their entertainment portfolio across their casinos on the Vegas Strip. While there are Cirque du Soliel shows, residencies, nightclubs, and concerts at MGM Grand, The Mirage, Mandalay Bay and other casinos, there has been a focus on two particular venues recently.
The opening of T-Mobile Area behind New York-New York and the Park Theater at Park MGM has helped usher in this new entertainment focus. While T-Mobile Arena hosts mostly major arena tours and sports, the Park Theater focuses on smaller performances and residencies.
The Park Theater is currently home to a rotating cast of residencies that includes Bruno Mars, Cher, and Ricky Martin. Earlier this year MGM Resorts announced that Lady Gaga will be joining the Park MGM roster for a residency that begins in December. The company recently announced that two more new resident shows will join the family.
Stevie Wonder (August)
Stevie Wonder begins a month-long residency at the Park Theater on August 3, with shows on the 4th, 8th, 10th, and 11th. The shows are being billed as “The Stevie Wonder Song Story: A Celebration of Life, Love & Music” Concert Series.
These shows are no joke. Stevie Wonder has a historic career. To date, he has amassed 49 Top 40 singles, 32 #1 singles and worldwide sales of over 100 million units. He’s won 25 Grammy Awards (including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.
This is similar to the Bruno Mars residency than a traditional Las Vegas residency. Like Bruno, Stevie is will be taking his show to other MGM Resorts casinos outside of Las Vegas. Borgata in Atlantic City, MGM National Harbor, and MGM Springfield will also host a few shows. You can see all of the dates here.
Queen + Adam Lambert (September)
MGM Resorts recently announced that Queen + Adam Lambert will begin a 10-date limited engagement. The show will be called “The Crown Jewels” and open later this year. The blast of shows will take place inside the Park Theater at Park MGM throughout the month of September. Shows will take place September 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 14, 15, 19, 21 and 22. It’s probably not a coincidence that one of the shows (September 8) lands on Queen Day in Las Vegas.
Billboard magazine was on to something with this review of Queen + Adam Lambert last year “A seamlessly executed Vegas assault — a just-right balance of kitsch, classic rock, and ‘70s excess. It’s all there; the bombast, melodrama, the drum solos, the glitter, the great songs, a crazy light show, big power chords.”
This show will offer a variety of viewing experiences including a few seats on the stage for each show.
